Former Australian champion fast bowler Merv Hughes will be the guest speaker at the 2017 Lord’s Taverners ACT Annual Dinner.

The event is being held on the evening of Thursday, 28 September at Royal Canberra Golf Club and tickets are on sale now. You don’t have to be a member of the Lord’s Taverners to attend – entry is open to anyone with an interest in cricket and supporting young and disadvantaged local cricketers and other athletes.

During his career at the elite level, Merv was an imposing right-arm fast bowler. He represented Australia in 53 Tests and 33 ODIs between 1985 and 1994, contributing much to the revival of Australia’s fortunes over that period. Highlights among his 212 Test wickets included 31 in the 1993 Ashes series in England and a remarkable hat-trick against the West Indies at the WACA in 1988. He also scored two Test 50s.

Merv was a key member of the Victorian State team from 1981/82 to 1994/95 and played county cricket in England with Essex in 1983. In 1997/98 and 1998/99, he played for the ACT.

In an era in which Australian cricket was often markedly dour, Merv, with his bustling style and signature moustache, brought colour and flair in ways that made him a crowd favourite. Merv served as an Australian selector from 2005 to 2010. He later appeared in a movie as Ivan Milat and in the 2015 version of the hit TV show “I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!”.

Funds raised at the event will go towards the Lord’s Taverners ACT, supporting the work we do for young and disadvantaged local cricketers and other athletes.
